How can I cash an Indian cheque in the US?

Hi, a company in India paid me with an Indian cheque in Rupees and I need to cash it in the US, is there some way I can do this?, banks tell me that you cannot cash Indian cheques outside of India, is this true, or is there some way I can pay something with it (pay off a credit card, buy travellers cheques in the US, etc)

Thanks

Banks mostly only cash checks for people that have an account with them. You could try a Federal Reserve Bank or if you have a friend that has an account somewhere see if they will deposit your check into their account. The bank will most likely put a hold on their account for the amount of the check until your check clears in India.

Try the State Bank of India, United States Operations

go 2 the bank!|||you can take it to most major banks - they will charge you a fee for it being from a different country

try the bigger international banks...|||take it to your bank for deposit and they will do the exchange for you. ya might have to wait awhile to draw on the funds.|||go a Bank of America and open an account.looks like they open accounts for just about any body with/without a socail securtiy card.|||Go to the largest bank you have Toa large bank, this might benothing unusual, buta small bank just might not want to be involved.|||ARE YOU SERIOUS??? You came to the US with no US DOLLARS?????????????????????????????????...|||It depends on the Bank as well as the Federal Law. For instance The government will not allow transactions if the money or bank is in a specific country, such as Iran/North Korea, etc. But in order for you to cash that check you will need a US bank account. And no you can not start one with that check. Once you have an established bank account you can go in there and make a deposit. Now they will do a conversion for you and in that conversion is a fee. Meaning the exchange rate they give you will suck. Also it may take up to a month before the money ever goes into your account. The reason is foreign checks can return as NSF or Fraud at any time, where as a US Check only takes about 2-3 weeks at the longest to come back. So good luck.
